Assessment and Learning Materials for Skills

Role-specific assessment tools and learning resources. The first preference is to curate them from off-the-shelf resources. Where this is not feasible, we develop relevant materials - textual content, graphics, animations, videos, games. We work with Subject Matter Experts, internal and external, of various functions to help build banks of relevant, role-specific assessment tools and learning resources.

We look at the many types of assessment resources that are on offer today - and are underwhelmed. Self-reports on personality dimensions can at best be interesting data, meant to spur further inquiry, not something to go by for an organisation's decision making. ‘General mental ability’ batteries that are proctored and timed when administered, can be better, if well-designed, but only by a notch. In the limited territory of software engineering, much better resources have been put up of late, for assessment of various skills related to programming and testing. But what about the large number of fields other than software engineering? There are no credible vendors.

Similarly, purchasing broad subscriptions to generic modules on all kinds of subjects through MOOC platforms, and inundating employees with those partly relevant choices is not a great way of enabling real employee learning, in our eyes. The figures speak for themselves - the low uptake by employees, and the low completion rates.

Much of performance is based on role-specific knowledge and skills. Assessment and learning resources need to focus there. In reality, a large proportion of employees is craving for appropriate learning materials.

Looking like hard work? Of course it is! But why would organisations not wish to put in hard work in such a crucial matter? Up until now, there hasn’t been any convincing framework to guide and limit the effort, making them seem infinite. Our approach helps build frameworks that limit the effort, while providing resources that are sufficient for the business.

Using these frameworks, we are in a position to curate as well as develop role-specific assessment and learning resources that role holders and their managers find credible and insight-rich.
